Hello October!

I get the feeling that Durango takes the start of Fall/October very seriously. It was almost on cue that the leaves turned yellow, the temperature dropped and the weather became, dare I say, a little spookier. And I am HERE FOR IT.

Hello October!

I get the feeling that Durango takes the start of Fall/October very seriously. It was almost on cue that the leaves turned yellow, the temperature dropped and the weather became, dare I say, a little spookier. And I am HERE FOR IT. As someone who recently lived in a land where Fall exists in name only (aka Texas), experiencing this changing of the seasons has my heart fluttering. The start of October also means . . . Halloween is coming (what else did you think I was going to say??)  I don't know if it's because my birthday closely follows Halloween, but I'm pretty partial to this spooky holiday, even if it's just an excuse to wear a silly costume. Here are some events to get you embracing October like never before.

Halloween Events

Family Friendly: Falfa Pumpkin Patch in Durango (County Rd 221) is having 3 spooky nights on the next 3 Fridays, October 7th, 14th and 21st. So you can pick your pumpkins while also enjoying treats and a Halloween movie.

Feeling artsy? Adela Flora is putting on a Ghouls and Glam event on October 15th where you can "make your own wearable floral art piece, get ghouled up with make-up or paint from Make Me Up Connie, enjoy treats from Beyond the Board, get an artsy photo by the talented Jenne Anne and end the night by listening to all the ghostly stories of Ghost Walk Durango." Tickets are $125 and can be purchased here.

Where's the party? The Secret Circus Society is serving up a Freaks and Treats event at the Animas City Theater on October 22nd, complete with a DJ and costume contest. Event starts at 9 pm and tickets start at $30.

And of course it wouldn't be Halloween without someone putting on a live production of the The Rocky Horror Picture Show. Luckily the Durango Arts Center has got you covered. There will be several shows Halloween weekend (Oct 28 - 30th) and tickets are $25.

Not really into the whole ticketed event thing? Host your own Halloween event i.e. spooky-themed dinner party, pumpkin carving or a movie night. Hocus Pocus 2 just came out, hint hint!

Other October Events

All Month: Durango's First Annual Spoketober kicks off October 3rd and includes multiple cycle-themed events throughout the month. The first event is a Meet & Greet with "cycling legends" at Mountain Bike Specialists.

October 8th: 14th Annual Apple Days Festival is happening at the Farmers Market this Saturday, 9 am to noon. There are also several apple glean events happening throughout the week as well which you can RSVP for here.

October 14th - 16th: Durango Open Studio Tour. According to the website, "emerging and professional artists are “opening their doors'' all over Durango, Colorado to explore, discover and connect. You’ll have the opportunity to purchase local art, explore artist’s techniques, and view a range of art in each studio." As someone who's become quite fond of the local art scene, I'm really looking forward to this.
